All you wanna know about Baby Yoda
The #1 streaming series, “The Mandalorian” on Disney + has taken the world by storm. The first live-action Star Wars TV series come into the beloved universe to explore. In the first episode, the eponymous Mandalorian is hired to go after a 50-year old target whose identity is otherwise obscured. After a shootout with armed thugs and a quirky assassin droid, the Mandalorian finally reaches his target - Inside a high-tech bassinet is a baby that looks just like Yoda, 50 years old but still in the very early stages of its 900-year lifespan.
Since this cute creature appeared at the end of episode 1, it immediately goes viral on all kinds of social media platforms. All the memes, gifs have been spread through the Internet, which makes the “Baby Yoda” a hot icon.
There are so many mysteries about this cute creature, we’ve listed the topics and questions fans care about most and let’s discuss.
Who is Baby Yoda?
The age of the child, 50. He's of the same species as Yoda, the Jedi Grand Master first introduced in the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back. Problem is, Yoda's species never got a name or a backstory. They're just smallish green aliens who are extremely Force-sensitive. Star Wars creator George Lucas has always kept Yoda mysterious, which adds to fan interest. “He's a magical character. He has no background. He comes and he goes. He's the subversive secret mysterious stranger that enters the film and then exits at the end." Lucas said in an interview with Moviefone.
The species is so rare and mysterious that no one knows what exactly is so mysterious about them. Perhaps there is something inherently powerful in the Force about them. Perhaps they’re no more or less likely to be great Jedi than humans are. The pointed ears are the surviving trait that displays the character's fantasy influence.
What is the relationship between Baby Yoda and the Mandalorian?
Regardless of who he is and where he comes from, Baby Yoda has provided a major pivot point for Mando, who decides to break the Bounty Hunters' Guild's code to save the child from the Client, taking the reward and the bounty itself with him to parts unknown. This not only makes Mando one of the most wanted men in the galaxy but also a confirmed anti-hero who chooses to do right when faced with a life-changing decision.
Throughout the season, Mando has been concerned with what's right for the child and finding a place where he might be safe from the other bounty hunters still looking to cash in. Mando hasn't found that hideout yet, having been foiled at every turn by competitors, but he has found a heart where the show initially suggested there might not be one. We expect the Mandalorian's fatherly role to only grow as long as he's protecting his young ward.
Where does he/she come from?
It’s not clearly indicated. In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker meets Yoda on the swampy planet of Dagobah, but he's in exile there, it's not believed to be his homeworld. The Mandalorian found The Child, aka Baby Yoda, on a desert planet called Arvala-7 that looked a lot like Luke's childhood home of Tatooine. There's no sign that there are more little Yodas around, so that's probably not its species' homeworld, either.
Why do we call it Baby Yoda? Does it have any relationship with Master Yoda?
We’ve only seen two of Yoda’s species in the Star Wars movies before “The Child” made his debut in episode 1. We don’t have a species name or anything else to call it. He looks like a young version of Yoda, so we call him… Baby Yoda. A female creature of this species, Yaddle, was part of the Jedi Council in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. And another male, Minch, appeared in the comics. And we have no idea if The Child is related to Yoda, or Yaddle, or even Minch, but maybe eventually we'll find out. So far, this is a small species.
What is its power?
So far, The Child has displayed super-excellent Force sensitivity, which allows him to levitate items. Remember how Luke struggled to lift his X-Wing out of the swamp? This baby can use the Force before it can even talk. He can do the Force-choke maneuver that Darth Vader showed off in the original Star Wars movie. Baby Yoda also revealed he has healing powers and can close up a wound by simply touching it and concentrating. Like the levitation, though, doing this wears him out. Clearly it has a lot of power, and it makes sense based on what we know about this species that the power could be inherent in its biology.
Yoda was also quite a lightsaber champ, so the little guy will probably excel at that someday. But Yoda had centuries to practice. There's also something valuable inside The Child that evildoers want and think they can extract -- maybe the infamous Midi-chlorians that allow for Force detection?
More Info
He eats soup, and maybe frogs.
He's excellent at hide-and-seek.
He's as inquisitive as any baby, playing with a metal shift knob from Mando's ship even when told not to.
The character is mostly a puppet, but sometimes some CGI is used. His voice comes from "a combination of baby samples, bat-eared foxes, kinkajous, & the sound design vocal talents of Dave Acord," according to Lucasfilm sound designer Matthew Wood.
He trends higher on social media than the Democratic presidential candidates.
The merchandise promoting him was kinda crappy at first (showrunner Jon Favreau said they couldn't get started on products too early for fear or revealing the character), but products are slowly getting better.
FAN THEORIES
- One fan theory suggests that someone somehow got Yoda’s DNA and began cloning force-sensitive babies.
- Another theory is that this child is the “Anti-Anakin”. The same way that Palpatine impregnated Anakin’s mother, The Force itself impregnated this baby’s mother to counter the dark side.
- Yoda had a secret life and had a child behind the Jedi Council’s back at some point.
- All of Yoda’s home planet is full of force-sensitive creatures. This one was either taken or misplaced.
- “The Child” is just another force-sensitive species in the giant galaxy and has no relation to Yoda.
Cultural Impact
If you’re on any type of social media, there’s no doubt you’ve seen hundreds of Baby Yoda memes. From us loving him unconditionally to his very expressive face, it’s no surprise that a cute new character from a fan-favorite franchise can take over the internet. BB-8 was very popular for a while and they tried with the Porgs in episode 8, but nothing compares to the impact that Baby Yoda has had on our nerdy society. His cuteness has even won over new Star Wars fans that have never even seen the show! They just want to see more Baby Yoda, so they bought Disney + and joined along for the ride.
